NEA micro-credentials | CMU Graduate Courses

Online Courses through Central Methodist University

CMU Earn up to nine graduate credits per year for $225.


For one low annual fee of $225, Missouri NEA members may take one course each term (fall, spring and summer) to complete up to three graduate courses in 12 months. Or they may take two courses in the summer and skip either the fall or spring semester. Each course is two or three graduate credit hours, so educators can earn from six to nine graduate credits. Choose from 17 self-paced, online courses for professional growth or salary advancement. MNEA partners with Central Methodist University and Virtual Education Software to offer these courses. We recommend members check with their school districts to be sure these courses will be accepted for salary schedule credit before signing up.

VESi recommends that you check with your school to verify that these course offerings will meet your school district requirements for salary advancement. If your district says no, please contact your local Missouri NEA president or UniServ director. If you are working on a master’s degree, before you enroll you should check with your advisor to see if these courses will be accepted towards your master’s degree. The courses are all 600 level courses. Central Methodist University provides the transcript for these pass/fail courses.

  • Understanding Aggression: Coping with Aggressive Behavior in the Classroom

Other courses address traumatized children, educational assessment, learning disabilities, inclusion, substance abuse, violence in schools, harassment and bullying, child abuse, and autism and Asperger’s disorder.

Non-members: PLC registration $150 now, micro-credential submission $75 paid to NEA later.

Optional Graduate Credit: 
After achieving the micro-credential, participants have the option of one hour of graduate credit through Baker University for $80 per micro-credential. Please check with you school district to be sure they accept these graduate credits toward advancement on your district salary schedule. 

After you receive your digital badge, enroll in Baker University to receive your graduate credit.    

What is a Micro-Credential? A MC is a short, competency-based recognition that allows an educator to demonstrate mastery in a particular area/skill. Educators collect evidence of proficiency in a specific area by working on their own, individual project designed to impact their professional practice.

  • MNEA members can submit their MC digital badge to Baker University and get one hour of graduate credit for $80.
  •  A MC is not a traditional course, and similarly, neither is a MC PLC facilitated in that manner.
  • MCs are self-directed, project-based professional development.
  • A MC usually takes up to 15 hours to complete.
  • Upon successful completion of the MC, a digital badge is awarded by NEA in partnership with Digital Promise that shows the earner’s name and the rubric used to earn the MC.
  • The MC digital badge is sharable and can be submitted to the employer, can be added to resumes, placed on social media, etc.
  • An educator who submits the required MC artifacts receives written feedback from the MC assessors if the submission is not awarded the digital badge on the first attempt.

What are the advantages of participating in a Micro-Credential PLC?

  • NEA trained facilitators lead 30 to 60-minute weekly support meetings via zoom.
  • During the PLC, a facilitator guides you through the MC enrollment and submission process.
  • Educators participating in a MC PLC are more likely to earn their digital badge the first time!
  •  On-line and no-cost resources are provided to help an educator learn more about the topic.
  • The PLC provides multiple opportunities for peer feedback and discussion about the requirements to earn the MC.
